Ay up!

Why is it that I always find my warding files clogged with white metal? New ones on order but does anyone know of a way of preventing this?

I've tried a file cleaner (sorry, forgotten the name) but this has little effect.

Any suggestions??

When I spent a lot more time than I do now, filing, we had a couple of different methods to remove
swarf from the files. Firstly, a stiff brass brush, but remember to use across the file, not along it.

secondly, you need a piece of square brass wider that a couple of the rows of teeth, and again
push this across the width rather than along.

thirdly, you could try a piece of mild steel also across the file, using the sharp edges to hunt out the white
metal.

you could also soak them in boiling water, which might well melt the white metal, and should not damage the
temper of the file.

but to help cure the problem, rub white chalk over the file and this should delay the build up.

G'Day Gents

When mine get clogged, I use a pointy blade to clean out the teeth, one at a time, surprising how quick you can clean them out.

Ay up!

Chalk, eh? I shall try that, New ones have arrived courtesy of the Bay of Evil.

Maybe this should be Off My Workbench! Any owner of an old Citroen C5 will know only too well the feeling of a worn and graunchy lock and I've been getting this from the ignition lock for a while. About 5 years ago, I had to replace the door locks after some local scrotes attempted to help themselves to my diesel by trying to force the locks ad succeeded only in wrecking them. The set I bought came with 2 keys, a steering lock, both door locks and a locking fuel cap. So that sorted the thieving scrotes!

However, changing a steering lock is (quite deliberately) a swine of a job. Access is tight and various weapons of mass destruction were used. But the real fun was to come. Finding where on the Lexia program to code the car to the keys (or vice versa, I have no idea about these things!!) was highly frustrating mainly because it was not where I expected it. Typical French!!!!

As an aside, during this the iron on my soldering stand broke so new iron on order......

Ay up!

Not the bet day ever.

This morning's activities to see a possible work opportunity was a bust - it was made abundantly clear to me that I was not wanted.

So, after a lunch with a friend where we nattered about the History Group (well, Mrs BB did, I was more interested in my grub!) I decided to give the Atlantic a last check over.

Just as well I did.

Couple of blobs of Araldite on the drivers need scraping off. Oh, and after setting Mole End up partially for pics, the loco just stopped. Investigation showed the bottom slidebar on the right hand side had detached itself. Errant slidebar was on the ballast so with much harrumphing, I put the layout away and headed for the darkened recess that is my workshop. Soldering the slidebar back was a piece of cake! And, for the 1st time, I have Romford drivers shifting on their axles.

Frustration levels rising, I switched the iron off and called it a day.

And I still have to make the front numberplate.....

Looking forward to finally getting my Atlantic back home after many many years.
It's been a long haul with plenty of mishaps along the way but BB has assured me that it is now virtually finished.

I'll post some images very soon, that is when it gets back on its 'home shed' !!
