Vans built in 1925 by the LNER for the Cheshire Lines Committee

Post by Colombo »

This question has arisen elsewhere and no satisfactory conclusion has been reached, yet.

In 1925 the Cheshire Lines Committee took delivery of some 66 vans from the LNER built to their diagram 15 . CLC 4809-69(?)
To quote Tatlow, LNER WAGONS.

Then in 1930 the wagon stock of the CLC was divided between the LNER and LMS in the proportion of their shareholding and the LMS got one third. So the LMS were in the anomalous position of owning some 22 LNER vans, which they would most probably have renumbered to avoid duplication with their own stock.
The LNER received 44 vans. Can these be identified?
On Nationalisation, any remaining stock of these vans must have received an M prefix to their running numbers.

Does anybody know where to find the running numbers of these vans? It is possible that the vans may have been sold back to or exchanged with others from the LNER

The LNER was directed to build more vans for the LMS during WW2. This question does not relate to this batch.

There is considerably more detail of the CLC wagons and their division in the expanded survey, volume 4A. No clue to the LMS running numbers that I recollect. (I don't have the books before me at present, but heartily commend them.)

R W Miller's CLC Wagon Stock Part 8 article in LNER Society Journal 67 states these wagons were to CLC Diagram 43C built in 1928. The LMS received 4848 to 4869 in 1930. No details of renumbering by the LMS is given.

The LNER portion was 4804 to 4847, which were renumbered 545528 to 545571. This diagram had hand brakes with through pipes.

I think the answer to your question could be found. But it requires real research, in documents that are not digitised.

It's just possible that the author of the LNER Wagons series of books, being a member of the LMS Society, might know - or Bob Essery does. If either of them does not then it probably will remain a mystery.
