ECML 1950 to the end of steam

I have finally begun my new layout based on the small station and yard mid way between Arbroath and Montrose called Inverkeilor, some remnants of the old station and yard still exist along with a signal box. The period chosen reflects the time when I was around although I never visited the area at this time, I have a local farmer acting as guide and mentor as he was at the village school at this time and a keen railway enthusiast.

This shows the commencement of track installation, I have used an ordnance survey map and two photographs I have been able to find of the station taken in the early 1950's.

Some further scenic work has been done

Most of the track has now been ballasted, next construction of the station platforms and the two tier goods platform to done, some painting of the road bridge and further scenic materials to be added.

Impressive progress so far.

Anything weird or unusual will catch my interest, be it an express or locomotive

I'm also drawn to the commemorative, let's hope Bachmann will produce 6165 Valour.

Thanks, this is after a bit of ballasting, the platform will not be used, just added to give me a feel of where everything will sit, some scratch building has been started with both station platforms and the two level goods loading platform. Station building and house to be built next.

I wonder can you help with a couple of questions, this yard would not have been massively busy I guess, but would there have been a water crane and some lighting for the yard? Photos I have seen show neither, but with long winter nights when the yard might have had more traffic it would have needed some light I would have thought. Photos show the station platforms had no lights and there's no sign of a height gauge either, were they not also required?

If in doubt, go off the photos. You can always use a bit of artistic license, but there would be that thought at the back of your mind when you compare it with the pictures afterwards.

Thanks Brian, there's a photo for sale on ebay that shows some poles, but it's not clear what is on them, I may add lights to the signal box, house and station building(even though this was not used for passenger traffic) and see what it looks like, a street light by the yard entrance will also be added.
This shows work in progress, the signal box is not staying there, wrong configuration.

Bit of an up date, all the track is now completed and two complete loops with fiddle yards for each track all tested with short trains over them, couple of pictures from the other day. Now a lot of scenic detail and buildings to add.

I think you could probably get away with an old and rather decrepit looking lamp, if there was a coal merchant operating in the yard. I suppose most people would probably pack up and go home around 5pm, but in winter months it can be quite dark before then.

Thanks John, I have seen tickets for goods for despatch to many locations in the depths of winter when it can get dark not long after 15.00, so I am sure there would have been some lights, the house was also lived in, so whoever lived in there would have needed a bit of light to weave their way through the yard. There are poles which are not telephone carriers, so may have been electric and could have had a light on them.

A question learned colleagues, would the points in the yard at Inverkeilor have been operated by hand or from the signal box?

G'Day Gents

Most yard points were by hand, enter/exit points 'Probably' controlled by the signal box or 'Ground Frame'
