I think you might be a touch on the big side for the platforms but at some point I will try and do some videos.

Happy New Year everyone.

In the little time I have had to do railway stuff have been trying to get the layout finished - mainly making trees and fences from bits of wire.
However I have been thinking that I would like to, and could hopefully, build an model of the Cambridge Buffet Express. Cutting my own sides then using old Hornby Gresley Coaches and left over Kirk bits as a base. The CBE is not only a short train so not so much to build but it was pulled by all sorts of engines and give something for D16s, B17s and even B12s to pull, as well and the C1/C2s.

I have a bunch of the old hornby coaches and they are pretty much spot on for 58'6" coaches and enough Kirk bits for the 61' 6". I do however need to spend a bit of money on isinglass drawings.

Before I order the drawings I though I would pop up the diagrams I am looking at to see if anyone notices if I am picking something completely wrong.
Its for the 1937 5 coach set.

58'6" GN 258 Corridor Brake 3rd
58'6 GN 248 Corridor 3rd
58'6 GN 78T Buffet
61'6" GN 164K Corridor Composite
58'6 GN 258 Corridor Brake 3rd

Thanks!

Is that taken from the 09:35 (300 Down) which is BT - T - C - RB - BT? I can't argue with your diagrams but someone with the information more easily to have may confirm.

Its what I can work out from the Banks/Carter book which mentions a 5 coach set of the make up you describe.

Ah, right. There are a few KX - Cambridge buffet trains in the 1937 document. I've attached the ones I've found scanning through it. These are only the buffet car trains, there are some others with no buffet element.

The carriage numbers indicate a type of carriage except where annotated with a 'K', in which case that is the exact carriage number to be used.

Please note that these are supplied by courtesy of Robert Carroll and respect his copyright. I'd recommend his group (now on Groups.io) if anyone wants more of this kind of source material.

Hopefully you have seen the picture among the LNER 4-4-0 pages of 'The Big Four in Colour' with D16/2 8787 resplendent ahead of the somewhat grubby ex GN vehicles on an up CBE at WGC. (It was universally referred to informally as 'the beer train', speedy to and from KX, and you could down a pint. The modern electric service is very efficient but 'something' is lacking.)

Indeed I have seen it and in the very long term pile I have this for just such a scene.

Thanks for the time table information. It looks like I am on the right track with the choice of coaches but maybe people shouldn't be drinking on the 9:35am train anyway.

I had planned to get to Southampton today to see Grantham but it wasn't possible in the end sadly.
However it did mean I had time to start the buffet car from the Cambridge Buffet Express.

First up a old Hornby Gresley

Strip it back sanding off all the beading, roof vents and cut off the corridor connectors.

Cut out a strip where the windows go.

New floor from 1.5mm plasticard, channel for solebars, buffers cut from the Hornby coach and spare kirk bogies.

Sides drawn up from Islinglass drawings and Steve Banks website. Then cut on the silhouette machine.

Phil,
Brilliant, what plasticard thickness have you used for the sides? I've seen silhouette machines used at a few exhibitions but not taken the plunge, yet. What have you found is the thickness limitation for using plasticard on this type of machine?

The coach is made of 10thou (0.25mm). This it will go through no problem - provided the blade is clean and I do a double cut. 20thou it will as well most times. Beyond that it will score and you can either snap or go over with a knife.
I have the cheaper portrait model and although it does sometimes mess me about it was a good investment and the blades don't need replacing very often.
