These kinds of photos always fascinate me. I love the infrastructure stuff.

The Newcastle east end shot is taken from the top of 19, westgate road Irving House, the roof in front is the Parcel depot and the square pointed roof is tyhe top of one of the lift shafts to platform level.

Thought about putting this one under "Cor", but it seems to me that it's more of a "Bloody Hell".

Great photo's Malcolm,i love York station so much. There is just something about it,a certain atmosphere that i can't explain. Also the shot "Wakefield Station"-is it Kirkgate? You say Yorkshire is land of your father. What part?As for all those bags on the platform, wouldn't fancy having to shift them all!

Thanks Ferrybridge,

Wakefield Westgate actually. My Father was born in Danby, North Yorkshire, and I agree with you that York is(was) a great station. However, there is only one station for me and that is, and always will be, Newcastle Central. I have tons of photos of the Central, and even have the track layout of the station in 1921 (4 feet x 2 feet courtesy of the NRM) hanging on my wall. Sorry to plug the Central, but if you want a really great railway book, see if you can get your hands on:

"The High Level Bridge and Newcastle Central Station. 150 Years across the Tyne" by John Addyman and Bill Fawcett.

It's the only railway book I have with me in Japan and I wouldn't part with it for the world.

I have only gone through Newcastle station, never really spent any time there.I love all those criss-cross lines though, they really do spell BUSY!When you see "then and now"photo's of stations it more often than not is frustrating, and the phrase "missed opportunity"always springs to mind.

Looks like Hoggett's crisp and pickle factory -noted for their pickled onions - by Bensham just outside of Newcastle.
Model Factory?? Re: the sign? Does this mean a factory making models or does it allude to the layout, organisation, production processes etc of the factory? Many times I 've crawled past here under caution signals heading into the Central Sation on a northbound train. Great to see this photo. I'll lay a thousand pounds to a hayseed that the 'aussie' 90406 is only days out of works. Far too clean! Won't be that clean again until her next 'general' and repaint.

suggest it is gateshead, there was a time when every factory had model in its name [it meant it was up to date at the time] the three vents you can see on the roof are from the potato crisp friers, and hoggetts where the first to make flavored crisps.

grimsby dock station.
strange layout for the nearest over bridge stairs, did they have a small gate at the bottom of the flight that was interlocked with the main gates???
