'Budgie' KX driver

Post by Mickey »

Anyone remember driver 'Budgie' of Kings Cross maybe during the 1960s but definitely during the first half of the 1970s I wonder what became of him?. I think he done a lot of his driving usually being seen alone driving Craven units between Kings Cross & WGC and Kings Cross & Hertford North.

G'Day Folks

Remember Budgie ( Ken Lester) very well, worked with him on many occasions, I had a whole week with him on the 'Palace Gates' shunt, Palace Gates Charringtons, coal shunt, then over to Rowntree's at Wood Green tunnel yard, then off to the Sand Yard at the other end of Wood Green station, then a bit of shunting at Bounds Green. The last time I met him was at Leeds SOP about 1990, I've read on Facebook he died around 1996/7.

Yup, I remember Budgie well when I was a signalman at Hertford North 1970/3. He was a real character and used to talk the hind legs off a donkey.
I believe he used to live in the former station house at Theobalds Grove.

Ken aka 'Budgie' was possibly from somewhere up north maybe around the Yorkshire area or the other side of the Pennines?.

G'Day Gents

He used to talk a lot about 'Barnetby' mostly when he was a fireman on steam.

One encounter that I recall having with Ken nearly half a century ago now was on the Up platforms at Welwyn Garden City station one day back around 1974 I believe it was anyway I was walking down the staircase from the footbridge onto the Up platforms to catch a semi-fast train up to Kings Cross and standing in the back platform (the old no.4 platform or Hertford line platform) was a Cravens unit waiting to form a 'all stations stopper' back up to Kings Cross and standing beside it on the platform was Ken in his B.R. drivers uniform who was obviously it's driver and even though I had seen Ken around a number of times by that time I wouldn't say I actually knew him to speak to as such anyway as I reached the bottom of the staircase Ken approached me and we had a chat.

RIP Ken or 'Budgie' you have been remembered...
