Both Blue Peter & Saint Mungo are remarkably clean for those times.

Interestingly, the York Pacifics' external condition appeared to improve as their demise grew ever closer. In the 1950s York engines had often rivalled their Gateshead brethren for grime.Probably more time was available to clean them given their, by then, irregular duties and also a number of sheds seem to have recruited some - by no means all -fairly keen young lads as cleaners in their final days eager to see steam out. Certainly, this was partly the case at Gateshead, though of course many dirty and neglected engines remained. At Aberdeen [Ferryhill] C1964 I was told of one cleaner who would swiftly complete his allocated work on the depot's diesel shunters and then turn his attention to an A4! There was also the MNA, a dedicated bunch of enthusiasts and photographers, who would descend on a shed and to the amusement and bewilderment of the staff set to work on an engine, in order to tidy it up for hoped for future photographs, ie the J27s and Q6s in the north east.
