The Master Cutler - which locos?

Post by barnowl »

I have the Hornby Master cutler set with loco A3 Prince Palatine.
The carridges included are BR Gresley corridor crimson & cream 61 6".
As oppsed to the BR MK 1`s.
I want to use other Steam Locos to pull these carridges.
What other steam locos would have pulled these carridges.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have seen pics of B1s being used, I suppose judging by your name you are in Sheffield any Darnal B1 could have been seen on it. There is an ex Darnal man on this site user name Boris he may be able to help.

No I am from the southeast. I have just updated my profile.
I only started into model railways a couple of years ago just love any of the British steam locos.
I`ve got locos from LNER, LMS, GWR, Southern and of course BR just trying to tie up locos & carridges.
Joined my local club beginning of this year & with a couple of others built the clubs first DCC layout in OO.
Which means I can run double the number of carridges compared to my home layout.

Just read this. Yes Darnall did have B1s on The Cutler. When it was first run under that name it was a Darnall mileage turn, out on the Master Cutler and back in Sheffield by about 3.15pm
The return working was also a B1 which was also a milage turn getting back in Sheff. about 10 ish.
The B1s were delivered in L.N.E.R green and numbered in the 1100 series the first we got.
I did work it once, not being in the link ,when a fireman failed, it was bloody hard work, especially as I was only a novice at the time.

The rota was Cutler one day then Sheff Vic. station pilot the next and so on for both the outward working and inward working crews so in fact it took 4 crews to work it for the week.

Some of the numbers at Darnall that period:-1109, 1110, 1111, 1122, 1123, 1139, 1140, 1141, 1142, 1143, 1144, 1150, 1151, 1152, 1153, 1154, 1156, 1158, 1169, 1179, 1181, 1183, plus one or two more but then the got an "E" and later a "6" added but we never used these for any loco always just the L.N.E.R.No., and I never ever heard the name Bongo used for the class it was always a B1.
We later got more and the last I remeber was 61313 which I fired to Leicester on the South Yorkshireman and Back on a Bournmouth -York, Got a pic at Leicester with driver Percy Goodchild ,but the chimneys cut off.

Hope this helps a bit.

I am looking at an illustration of 61199 on the down 'Cutler' at Princes
Risborough. In very early BR scheme - BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender.
Must be pre-1955 'cos 1199 was at 52A Gateshead by then.

Thanks Boris i will update my Tweedmouth allocation record accordingley. Now why was a North Eastern loco on the Master Cutler. BTW do you have allocation for 1198 she is shown at Tweedmouth at same time in 1947, these modern designs were leading up to the finish of the D20s and other pre grouping classes at various sheds in the North Eastern region.

Hello 52D

I regret unable to scan...

however, illustration is on page 94 of 'Titled Trains of Great Britain' - C.J.Allen - Third edition 1953 (first published 1946) Photo credit to H. K. Harman.

The buffer beam number can be ascertained as 6119(x) but the cabside is lost in the gravure.
I can see no evidence of a smokebox door number plate - but it is in full shadow.. that would put the date of picture fairly early in BNR tenure.

The loco carries two very clean white train describer discs.

The first three coaches are Gresley teak stock, the detail is too poor for the remainder......

Best Wishes

B

G'Day Gents
The 'Flying Scotsman' was allocated to the Great Central for a while in the early 50's as was Prince Palantine, V2's and B17's were other LNER types allocated to the Great Central, both avalable RTR
While we are on the subject of Great Central did any A1's or A2's ever run on the GC, I have seen a picture of an A1 at Sheffield Victoria, on a special 8)

Occasional visits were made by A1s and A2s to the GC .In 1950 there was a report of York A2/2 60501 heading an FA Amateur Cup Final special to Wembley and I seem to remember an A1 - 60123? - being reported in 1962 on a Sheffied Victoria- Nottingham stopping train.

There used to be the "Starlight Specials" Marylebone to Edinborough on Friday and Sat nights.

Packed to the top but all seated about 4 or 5 each night, to relieve the block on the G.N.

We used to take them Darnall to York, usually a B1 or V2 with 11 on.

I remember one fireman coming in one night saying he had just fired an A4 to York on a "Starlight", don't know which one though.

They wouldn't have gone into Sheffield Vic though as they took the curve at Darnall West towards Attercliffe and Tinsley.

I've resurrecting this thread again to ask if anyone could point me to where I might be able to find the names of any A3s that pulled the Master Cutler?

I have found these so far, but I'm not sure of the dates.

Flying Fox
Galtee More
Prince Palatine
Sir Frederick Banbury
Solario
Tracery

Were locos allocated to the Master Cutler shedded at Neasden and Leicester in the main? If so I could perhaps track some more down using BRdatabase.

A friend of mine used to bike from Coventry to Rugby as a lad to do a bit of spotting. He recalls seeing the same A3 several pulling the Master Cutler several times in and around 1952, but can't remember its name. I can't think why.

He parted with his spotter books years ago, but he's adamant it wasn't any I've listed. Methinks it was probably an A1 anyway.

I've just joined the GCR Society, so perhaps they may have some idea. It would be a laugh to find out the right loco and to present him with a photo of it, filched from the net, with a schoolboy in the frame with his face photoshopped on it. There is a good photo of Galtee More with a school kid on the platform which would have been ideal. :D
