£1000 rail fare!

A sad sign of how rediculous the fares structure is in this country;

I would expect a couple of return flights to Australia for that!

Interesting comment in the London Evening Std about this - a quote from Cross Country who would have to issue said ticket for this amount was that they had "never sold one of these tickets" it was written in a way that implied that they never even expected to sell one of these tickets!!

What gets me is that somebody was sad enough to actually look for it!

There is no need for anyone to pay £1000 or so for a train ticket when All Line Rail Rovers are available for 7 days at £430 (£650 First Class) and for 14 days at £650 (£990 First Class). Anyone wanting to stay for longer than 14 days could easily buy two 7-day tickets and still be in pocket. We need to remember that the media, being in the pockets of the motoring lobby, are biased against railways. The maxim, "Never let the facts spoil a good story," has been used for many years. Indeed, the Daily Wail of 10th November 1931 carried an absurd report of a speed record attempt on the SR between London and Brighton which involved, inter alia, the replacements of points and crossings by new rail to minimise the risks!

The rail rover ticket opened up my horizons when i first started spotting. I think in 1966 it was 21 shillings for a northen rail rover ticket which took you as far as Berwick, Midlesborough and Carlisle. I started on the Sunday from Alnmouth (Alnwick was closed sundays) and travelled to Berwick then to Newcastle with a trip round the North Tyneside loop before returning home, the rest of the week was spent in Carlisle watching Brits 9fs and LMS types plus a couple of B2s and V2s off the waverley happy days.
Only regret was i never took the chance to travel to Alston.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
