LNER Driver
My husbands father John(Jack)Mcintyre was a fireman later driver on we think Mallard and Flying Scotsman he was based at Greensfield Depot Gateshead he was what we called in Gateshead a fast engine driver. I remember him as a child in his blue overalls andjacket and shiney black cap. He died aged 66 in the fifties my husband says he remembers a photo of him with the cowboy Tom Mix on the footplate taken we dont know when. We would love to know more about his career with LNER as he was seperated from my husbands mother and only came to visit now and again. His brother was also a driver George Mcintyre and we would like to find out anything we can about them as my husband is now 80 and we are running out of time.
Re: LNER Driver
There was a George McIntyre who was a Driver at Tyne Yard and I think ex Gateshead. He was ex Royal Navy in WW2, does this ring any bells?
Re: LNER Driver
Thank you for your reply.Yes George Mcintyre was ex R.N. we did not know what depot he worked from but both Jack and George were ex Navy and long time drivers.
Re: LNER Driver
Hi
I was Geordies regular mate at Tyne yard and i was due to pass rules and regulations, every day he used to test me with a few rules. He was well versed on the rule book. I passed first time, he was a good railwayman and a nice chap. Many happy memories.

My aged mother (now 84) recently revealed that her grandfather, John Arnott, born 1874 in Edinburgh was an engine driver on the Flying Scotsman. Considering his age this must have been in the early years. Do any records exist by which this could be verified?
Re: LNER Driver
I think that my great grandfather John Arnott born in Edinburgh 1874, is the same person. Did he have any brothers or sisters.oldbill wrote:My aged mother (now 84) recently revealed that her grandfather, John Arnott, born 1874 in Edinburgh was an engine driver on the Flying Scotsman. My grandfather also John Arnott was the lead violinist in the Scottish Philharmonic.
Any info would be greatly received.
