..and it has had a lot of dodgy restorations even if the PR at the time was otherwise. I think Marchington described his restoration as a "Rolls Royce" restoration! Even if that was true, we know maintenance tailed off as finances became poor.

Well, sad as it is to say, Rolls Royce (1923) is not the same as Rolls Royce (2011). Perhaps Tony should have been more specific!richard wrote:..and it has had a lot of dodgy restorations even if the PR at the time was otherwise. If a Thompson rebuild is the answer... the question must have been daft to begin with!
Re: Barrow Hill Fab Four 13-15 April 2012
I think the point is, that we all want to see 4472 back in steam, and what's a few more months to an already long running overhaul anyway.
There's little point now in trying to point fingers and play a blame game, it goes over two decades of engineering and changes in management anyway, so it's probably best to support and be positive for the hard working souls doing their best on her at the minute (not to mention there is an ongoing internal investigation at the NRM in any event. Not something which comes up very often, so perhaps some appreciation for Mr Steve Davies for instigating one?)
Besides - what hasn't been mentioned is the preservation first that will happen at Barrow Hill this year. Two garter blue A4s, with valances, seen together for the first time since - it must be 1940?
4464 Bittern and 4468 Mallard - that will be a sight worth seeing. Silver lining and all that, chaps...

I'm aware that Bittern is to regain her nameplates and numbers this year, but has the conversion already taken place?

I think they're keeping Bittern in garter blue with valances, but as 4464

NRM will be sending Mallard to the Fab Four event at Barrow Hill.

Would I be right in presuming that Bittern's second tender is the same one that was used by 4472?

delticfan, Mallard's planned appearance was noted in the original post.

blackout60800
thats something ive quite often thought so unless they sold the tender to the A4 then technically the second tender of 4472 should belong to the NRM along with the rest of the engine
