Gateshead Engine Shed

Post by silverstreak »

I have been doing some research on the Newcastle area as it was in the late 1920's with the prospects of potentially modelling the area. I was wondering what information I could get about Gateshead tmd as it was at the time, particularly track plans of the inside of the shed as well as the servicing area and carriage sidings. I am also interested in what particular types of locomotives would have been allocated to Gateshead in the late 1920's. Any help will be appreciated!

K Hoole - Rail Centres - Newcastle page 113 has allocations for 1923 and 1939, and very interesting they are!
On 6th December 1923 the only Pacifics were the two initial NER ones, and the Atlantics included the two compounds.
They would all be fun to model, but I'm not sure how to get them to go round bends.

On 1st January 1939 there were A1s, A3s and A4s but still 13 Atlantics, including the two C9s.

NERA (North Eastern Railway Association) LNER NE Area Locomotive Shed Diagrams Volume 2 has a layout of Gateshead for 1933.

(I presume you were interested in Gateshead Greensfield rather than Gateshead Borough Gardens - for which both the above publications also have details)

Track plans of NER sheds can be found in Paul Bolgers book on "BR Loco Depots (NER area)" but better are the two booklets published by the NERA. These latter are "LNER (NER area) Locomotive shed diagrams vols 1 and 2" costing respectively £4.50 and £3.50 (by post £5.75 and £4.50). I am not sure which contains the Gateshead layout.

There is a Challenger Publicatons book "LNER Locomotive Allocations - 1st January 1923 - The first day" by W. B. Yeadon.

On that day Gateshead had 104 locos on its books comprising:-
A2 2, B14 5, B16 3, C6 7, C7 22, C8 2, D17/1 5, D17/2 3, D20 14, D22 1, F8 2, G5 6, G6 1, H1 5, J21 8, J25 2, J71 4, J72 5, J77 1, N8 1, N10 2 and Y7 3.

The proponderance of express and local passenger locos give a clue to the shed's main duties. The B14s left in 1924. Gresley A1s and later the A3s arrived to replace some of the Atlantics but the latter remained at Gateshead until after WW2. C6 No. 784 retained its Green livery throughout WW2 but by then was stored out of use at the West end of the shed where is was clearly visible from trains crossing the King Edward VII bridge.

Thank you all for the information. Unfortunately my biggest problem is that I live in the US and most books on the LNER are rather hard to come by and require online ordering which is not always available. My biggest interest at the moment is trying to find the track plan for the shed area for the purposes of planning a model. Is there any available source online that can provide these plans?

Sorry I don't know of any online source. There are probably Ordnance Survey maps available on those sites offering Old Maps but they probably don't show the internals of the shed.

Not a lot I can add but be aware that the were no carriage sidings at Gateshead MPD. Main line servicing was undertaken at Heaton carriage sidings. To a lesser extent there were some carriage sidings at Scotswood and Blaydon = these mostly servicing trains on the Carlisle line.
