Isn't "Lord of the Isles" a very Great Western name?

sorry for a quick change of subject but whats(any) the news on the Aussie/China build Titanic 2 ?richard wrote:I don't think the Duke has expressed any interest in steam locomotives? The Prince has.
If we were rebuilding a replica ship I think it would be the other way around - the Duke has strong naval connections, but I don't think the Prince has gone beyond what is expected as a heir?

This was news to me - didn't believe it at first till I googled it - it goes to show just how odd the antics of railway fans might appear to the wider world.. Still likely a massive money spinner if it gets built.. Much more so than the P2, ..or the Matthew Stirling H&BR class B (J23) suggested abovemr B wrote: sorry for a quick change of subject but whats(any) the news on the Aussie/China build Titanic 2 ?

I understand Hornby made a profit from Tornado, the A1 trust - no so sure..

More P2 News. Here's the beginning of the press release (the rest is the usual background stuff):
http://www.p2steam.com for details, donations, etc.A NEW FIRE-BREATHING DRAGON IS BORN ON ST GEORGE’S DAY
New steam locomotive No. 2007 Prince of Wales makes history with the rolling of frames at Tata Steel in Scunthorpe
Coinciding with St George’s Day, a new fire-breathing dragon was born in the rolling mills of Tata Steel in Scunthorpe yesterday. The dragon in question is no lightweight but the 21 ton steel frames for a new steam locomotive which will eventually weigh around 170 tons being built by the same team behind famous new steam locomotive No. 60163 Tornado, completed in 2008 and paid for by public subscription. The new locomotive is Gresley P2 Class No. 2007 Prince of Wales and the rolling of the frames, traditionally the point at which the locomotive is deemed to exist, comes hot on the heels of TV presenter James May making the first component – the smokebox dart - in Darlington Locomotive Works on Thursday 20th February 2014.

People might not like the name 'Prince of Wales', however if another name had been chosen then the frame plates might not have been rolled quite so speedily.

Is that in case the old lady croaks it before the engine is built?sawdust wrote:People might not like the name 'Prince of Wales', however if another name had been chosen then the frame plates might not have been rolled quite so speedily.

Don't be ridiculous! The royal connection carry's a lot of weight, with say the foreign owners of a large international steel company for example.60527 wrote:Is that in case the old lady croaks it before the engine is built?sawdust wrote:People might not like the name 'Prince of Wales', however if another name had been chosen then the frame plates might not have been rolled quite so speedily.

Re: New P2 to be named 'Prince of Wales'
No, because the title "Prince of Wales" passes to the next in line to the throne so there is always a Prince of Wales. Don't know what would have happened if George had been a girl mind. I think Duke of Rothsay would have been better and more in keeping with the previous engines. but lets say that this P2 is the first of the English batch that Gresley was about to build. Also having read how much the difference in donations is between the two groups building a P2 i think one may fall by the wayside unfortunately.60527 wrote:Is that in case the old lady croaks it before the engine is built?sawdust wrote:People might not like the name 'Prince of Wales', however if another name had been chosen then the frame plates might not have been rolled quite so speedily.
