York to Harrogate Redoubling?
North Yorkshire County Council has applied for cash towards possible redoubling of the track between Knaresborough and Cattal which has been estimated to cost £12.5 million in total. I'll believe it when I see it but at least it shows that someone in the Ivory Tower knows it needs to be done!

G'Day Gents
That would be a very good idea, needs doing, always used to be a heavy loading on a 141, don't know what it's like now though.

Nice to see some redoubling, but are they doing the right bit? If the objective is two trains per hour (which will greatly improve Harrogate connections to London & the north) it may not help a lot from what I understand

Sadly somewhat shortsightedly, not long after the line was singled, a new bridge was built carrying the A59 over the line near Poppleton, which only has room for a single track underneath.
Thus preventing full reinstatement of double track, without enormous expense.

Three big problems here.richard wrote:Re-open the remainder of the Leeds-Thirsk line
Firstly, landfill tip in the deep cutting and tunnel near Wormald Green.
Secondly, the Ripon bypass.
Lastly, where the new A1(M) crosses the line.

Good point about the bridge though I am sure it would be feasible to widen it if they wanted to. Assuming the redoubling included modernisation of the level crossing it would be a big improvement since, in the days when I worked trains here, the crossing keeper at Whixley would often not turn up in the morning causing heavy delays to the first York to Harrogate train.sawdust wrote:Sadly somewhat shortsightedly, not long after the line was singled, a new bridge was built carrying the A59 over the line near Poppleton, which only has room for a single track underneath.

Reopening Leeds - Ripon is a non starter for the reasons stated plus of course the missing viaduct at Ripon.
Re: York to Harrogate Redoubling?
With all the work about to start in the construction of the new Park and Ride car park, which will be adjacent to the railway - this is another opportunity lost for joined up thinking. Rather than spend the money on building bus lanes along the A59, we could have used this to help fund a rail operated park and ride.sawdust wrote:Sadly somewhat shortsightedly, not long after the line was singled, a new bridge was built carrying the A59 over the line near Poppleton, which only has room for a single track underneath.

This is quite true but then they go to the other extreme. A couple of years ago they built a new bypass dual carriageway just up the road. (It only has a 40mph speed limit totally mad) it crosses the Blyth and Tyne near Backworth. This is now only single track but was once double and in addition there were two NCB tracks as well giving four tracks at one time. So when they build the new bridge how big do they build it? yes to span four tracks what a waste!!!.
