East Coast Giants of Steam - Barrow Hill 8/9th Feb 2014
East Coast Giants of Steam – LNER Heaven 8/9th Feb 2014
Put the date in your diaries early. At Barrow Hill, Staveley, near Chesterfield, on 8th and 9th February 2014 don’t miss the opportunity to see recently restored A4 locos “Dominion of Canada” and “Dwight D. Eisenhower” in a real steam shed environment before they move North to Shildon on their way back to North America.
http://www.barrowhill.org/links/GIANTSOFSTEAM.pdf
With A2 “Blue Peter”, GNR large-boilered Atlantic No 251, and GCR Director “Butler-Henderson” normally in residence at Barrow Hill the A4s should be in good company. Full size Deltic locos are also scheduled for the event, bolstering the East Coast main-line theme.
Additionally booked to be in attendance and operating is the large, developing OO gauge model railway “Grantham – The Streamliner Years” by 4479 of this parish, with support from fellow LNER modellers. This layout depicts Grantham circa 1937 and it is intended to run an intensive service of LNER trains appropriate to the area and the period. Whilst scenically far from finished, the layout already incorporates the main elements of the station, the loco shed and many correctly working models of the somersault signals specific to Grantham at the time. For more information about the layout see its thread in the modlling section of this forum, or http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index. ... rs/page-28
The special LNER pre-war period operating sequence for this event is planned to include:
All 35 A4 class locos
W1 rebuild No 10000
Various Gresley A1 and A3 Pacifics
V2s
At least two of the LNER’s streamlined coaching sets
Several sets of authentically modelled LNER teak coaches
Local services featuring new and pre-group non-corridor coaches with locos such as D2s C12s etc.
Goods workings including coal, fish and general merchandise.
A whole host of other typical LNER locos on goods duties, in the loco shed, or assisting with passenger workings, e.g. A5, Robinson B4, Ivatt C1 & C2 large & small boilered Atlantics, D10, J3, J11, J39, J52, K2, K3 (various types), O2, O4 (including O4/5 and O4/7 sub-types), P1 (possibly on a giant test train), Q2, Q3, and no doubt others.
Other LNER locos making rarer appearances at Grantham may include Raven A2, B16, C6 or C7, B12, C5, B3, B17, D11, D49, J6, J10, J41, J50, K4 (visiting Kings Cross for viewing by the directors) Robinson L1, N2, Q4 and an interpretation of Gresley’s projected but never built 4-8-2.
It is also hoped to secure use (for trials or on a running-in turn from The Plant) of an example of Hornby’s new super-detailed P2 loco “Cock o’the North” (and possibly other P2 variants) for this event.
If Timewarp Tunnel is in use the odd Thompson loco or other unusual beast may be seen too.
Come along and reminisce, take pictures, get your spotting books out, or just enjoy the experience. If you have good knowledge of the details of Grantham in 1937, then please tell us if there are important little features that ought to be part of the model.

Oh, I don't know - a lot of my recent operating leads me to believe that the last person you should allow to operate a layout is the owner. At least one of the people I operate for freely admits that I'm right, too.

A tad out of period, but a suitably detailed Butler Henderson in GC livery can be provided on one of the days if she is needed (I also have a Gresley 3rd corridor, buffet and brake with FS boards if needed)
EDIT; If they have arrived in time, I can provide the P2 No. 2001 and a backup 4489 for one day. I will likely be there for the Saturday of the event

Actually, I look forward to being on the public side of the barrier and watching a team of well-trained operators putting on a great show... maybe not first time out though?jwealleans wrote:Oh, I don't know - a lot of my recent operating leads me to believe that the last person you should allow to operate a layout is the owner. We should have the 12":1' scale Butler Henderson for company actually 60800, as we'll be set up on the adjacent pit road to where 'he' currently resides (unless Merv shunts the shed in the meantime). Appropriate guest locos always welcome (although priority has to be given to those 35 A4's )

Re: East Coast Giants of Steam - Barrow Hill 8/9th Feb 2014
Would you like me to make 2001 and 4489 available for both days then? I'll look into going for both days, but if that's not possible then I'd require someone to post or deliver the locos back to Scunthorpe

Doesn't that cover 4489 and 2001 already, pretty much?All 35 A4 class locos...

You could renumber one of the P2s as 2007 - that would get people talking...jwealleans wrote:Doesn't that cover 4489 and 2001 already, pretty much? All 35 A4 class locos...

Thank you, but in all honesty we are covered regarding the locomotives for the weekend, but obviously you are welcome to enjoy viewing the layout along with the many like minded people who will be there.60800 wrote:Would you like me to make 2001 and 4489 available for both days then? IF we actually get a Hornby P2 to play with in time for the event, then depending on who actually owns it at that stage a temporary disguise as 2007 may not be out of the question.

G'day all
I'm almost getting envious of those who will be there. The thought of 12" to the foot locos coupled with a super LNER layout is almost unbelievably good.
I'm busy with a disco on the saturday, and it's a bit far for a day trip from sleepy Surrey on the sunday.
I hope someone takes some pics and posts them on here.
